Season Finale

We have finished our seventh season of high school bowling in the Panhandle.  There have been several changes since we started in 2003 with three boys and three girls teams.  We sent two boys and two girls teams to the state tournament and none of them made the finals.  We have come a long way since that year.

Every year we graduate some outstanding seniors and it seems like we won’t be able to replace them, but every year we have students step up and take their place.  The one area of concern to those of us who coach these teams is getting bowlers to fill up the girls teams.  It’s easy to see that the best two teams this year were the two teams that always had a full roster.  The othe teams had weeks when they did not have a full team and you can’t win against a team that does have a full team.  We hope that the girls we have coming back will get their friends involved in the program and we can get the girls teams back to full strength.

Week 12 Results

All the post season spots were settled before the last week and only the final standings were in question.  In the girl’s division., Canyon beat Bushland 13.5 – 1.5, Tascosa beat Amarillo 13-2, and Caprock beat Randall 14-1.  In the boy’s division, Canyon beat Bushland 12-3,Amarillo High beat Tascosa 14-1, Caprock beat Randall 11-4, andWest Texas beat Borger 13-2.

Standings

With one week to go, all the playoff spots are settled.  In the boy’s  division Amarillo High has won the district and Canyon Tascosa and Bushland have made the playoffs.  In the girl’s division, Caprock has a one match lead over Tascosa but can’t advance to the playoffs because they have a bowler that goes to Highland Park.  Tascosa is second and Amarillo High and Canyon are tied for third and those three teams will advance to the playoffs.

The post season will start with the Regional Tournament which will be held at Western Bowl on March 6th.  Teams from the Ft Worth North and North Texas (Denton) districts will join the teams from the Panhandle district to battle for spots in the State Tournament in San Antonio.

The Matches

There are two parts to each match.  First the individual members of the two teams bowl a two game match and the winner will be the individual with the highest total for the two game series.  The winner gets one point for the team.  The coach of the visiting team puts their line up in first and the home team coach can match up in any order against the visiting team.  This allows the home team to use some strategy to try to win more points.  The team with the highest team series will get 2 points.  There are five individual matches and 2 points for team series for a total of seven points.

In the second part of the match, the two teams bowl three Baker games.  In a Baker game, the first bowler bowls the 1st and 6th frame, the second bowler bowls the 2nd and 7th frames, and so forth.  Each Baker game is worth 2 points and the Baker series is worth 2 points for a total of eight points.  It’s possible for a team to lose all the individual matches and win all the Baker games and win the match 8 to 7.

Week 11 Results

There were more matches than usual because of a make up that was postponed because of the weather.

On Monday, Canyon and Tascosa met at Western Bowl.  In the girls match, Tascosa won four of the five individual matches and swept the Baker games and won the match 14-1.  In the boys match Tascosa took a 4-3 lead after the individual matches and swept the Baker games to win the match 12-3.

On Wednesday, Borger and West Texas went to Eastridge Lanes to bowl Caprock and Tascosa.  Caprock beat Borger in a close match 8-7, and then beat West Texas 11-4.  Tascosa beat West Texas 12-3 and then beat Borger 10-5.

Also on Wednesday, Amarillo High and Randall met at Western Bowl.  In the girls match Amarillo High beat Randall14-1, and the Amarillo High boys beat Randall 15-0.

On Thursday Bushland went to Eastridge to bowl against Caprock.  The Caprock girls won the match 10-5 and the Caprock boys won 9-6.

Post Your Finish Position

When you hear someone talk about posting the finish, they mean to get to your finish position in a balanced position and hold it while the ball rolls down the lane.  It’s hard to be consistent if you are balanced on one shot and then fall to the right after the next shot.  We have all seen bowlers who look good from the start, straight swing, good timing, and then they break down at the finish and the ball goes left on one shot and right on the next shot.  The bad thing is when they bowl on a house shot they could get a good result from those bad shots and not know they need to improve.  If you try to post your finish position, you will know right away if you need better balance at the end.  If you improve your balance, the other parts of your game will improve also.

Week Ten Results

Amarillo High and Bushland bowled on Monday.  The Amarillo High boys  won four of the individual matches and swept the Baker games and won the match 14-1.  The Bushland girls took a 5-2 lead after the individual matches and won the first Baker game to move to 7-2, but the Amarillo High girls won the last two Baker games and won the match 8-7.

On Tuesday, Canyon went to Borger to meet Borger and West Texas. Canyon beat Borger in the first match 14-1 and then came up with a good third Baker game and edged out West Texas 8-7.  Randall did not make the trip to Borger so Borger and West Texas both won by forfeit.

On Wednesday, Caprock went to Western Bowl to meet Tascosa.  The Tascosa boys won four of the individual matches and two of the Baker games to win the match 12-3.  The Caprock girls won four of the individual matches to take a 6-1 lead, but Tascosa won the first two Baker games and had the lead in the last game, but Caprock came back at the end to win the game and the match 8-7.

Timing

Timing is the relationship of your armswing to the steps in your approach.  Good timing can make your approach seem effortless and your release will be smooth and powerful.  Poor timing can cause your approach to seem out of control and out of balance and your release can weak and off target.  There are five elements that affect timing.

  1. When the ball is put in motion.

  2. The length of the pushaway.

  3. The length of the backswing.

  4. The length of the steps.

  5.  The rhythm and cadence of the steps.

All these elements combine to get the bowler to the line in the correct position to deliver the ball as effectively as possible.  In general, the ball is put in motion with the first step of a four step approach (second step of a five step approach.  The motion should start with both hands and the non bowling hand should release the ball so that it passes by your body while the foot on the opposite side is moving forward.  The armswing should be free of muscle control and the weight of the ball should pull the arm back and up into the backswing.  When the ball reaches the top of the backswing, it will start to fall into the forward swing.  Your arm should still be free of muscle force.  The ball should reach top speed at the bottom of the swing where your thumb should come out and your fingers will put rotation on the ball.  This should happen at the end of your slide.

This is traditional timing.  Modern timing might look a little different.  To create more speed and faster revolutions, modern timing might start the ball later in order to create later timing and more power in the release.  There is no one correct way and you should experiment by putting the ball in motion at different times to see how it affects the release.  Your coach can help you if you are having problems deciding what works best.

Week Nine Results

Because of the weather, there were only two matches this week.  Randle and Bushland bowled each other on Monday at Western Bowl.  In the boys match, Bushland took a 4-3 lead after the individual matches and swept the Baker games to win the match 12-3.  The Bushland girls won three of the individual matches and swept the Baker games and won the match 13-2.

The Amarillo High boys took a 5-2 lead after the individual matches and won the first Baker game to move to 7-2.  Canyon won the second Baker game to make it 7-4.  If Canyon could win the last game by enough pins to win the Baker series, they would win the match.  Canyon had a 225 game, but Amarillo High had the highest Baker game of the season, 279, to win the match 11-4.  In the girls match Canyon had a 5-2 lead after the individual matches, but Amarillo High won the first Baker game to make it 5-4.  Canyon won the second game to move to 7-4, but Amarillo had a slight lead in the Baker series.  That meant that the winner of the last game would win the match.  Canyon got the early lead and won  the game and the match 11-4.

Pin Carry

I was reading an article in the current issue of Bowling This Month magazine and it reminded me of some things I noticed recently.  I was bowling league and I started the last game with two missed spares, an 8-10 split, a strike and a 4-5-7 split to open four of the first five frames.  At the same time, another member of my team had a long string of strikes, a 10 pin and then more strikes.  Another member of my team asked why I was bowling so bad and I answered that I had not missed the pocket yet and with a little luck I would have as many strikes as the other bowler.  I was joking about the strikes, but I did not miss the pocket the entire game.  I was hitting the pocket light and leaving buckets and pocket splits.  After I adjusted my feet and my target I did get a double, but left two 10 pins and a 4 pin, all pocket hits.  My teammate shot a 276 game and I had a high 160 game.

The article was about watching the ball reaction all the way down the lane and adjusting to what you see.  This works well if you are accurate enough to hit the same target every time and if you know how to adjust to changing lane conditions.

The article also was about leaving 10 pins on pocket hits and what to watch for.  Most 10 pin leaves are caused by the ball hitting the headpin light and the ball deflecting too much, causing the 6 pin to go in front of the 10 pin.  This brings up another thing I have observed recently.  A bowler hits the head pin light causing a “weak 10” and he turns around in frustration as if to ask why that didn’t strike.  Then the next shot he leaves the same “weak 10” but the 6 bounces out of the gutter and knocks it over.  Then the next shot and the same ”weak 10” but a pin bounces off the opposite wall and across the lane and knocks the 10 pin down.  The same “weak 10” shot three times but with different results.  It’s great when you get lucky on weak hits, but you can’t count on that happening all the time.  If you see a “weak 10”, make some kind of adjustment.  Use a stronger ball, slow the speed, change your hand position, or adjust your target line.  Your coach will have some good ideas about how to do this.  Ask questions, you will get some good advice.

Week Eight Results

Bushland and Amarillo High went to Wildcatters to bowl against Borger and West Texas.  Bushland won four of the individual matches and two of the Baker games from West Texas and won the match 10-5.  Against Borger, Bushland fell behind 5-2.  Each team won a Baker game meaning the winner of the last game would win the match.  Bushland won by 3 pins and won the match 8-7.  Amarillo High won three of the individual matches and and swept the Baker games to beat Borger 13-2.  In the match against West Texas, Amarillo High swept the individual matche and won the first Baker game to win the match 9-6.

The Caprock girls won three individual matches and swept the Baker games and beat Canyon 13-2.  The Canyon boys won four of the individual matches and one Baker game to beat Caprock 8-7.

The Tascosa girls won three individual matches and swept the Baker games to beat the Randall girls 13-2.  In the boy’s match, Tascosa swept the individual matches and won two of the Baker games to beat Randall 13-2.

Comfort Zone

This was one of the lowest scoring weeks ever recorded in our district.  There were only two 200 games this week and no one averaged 200 for two games.  Brittany Mansel had the high series for the week with a 394.  There were several games in the 190’s, but the overall average for both boys and girls was lower this week than usual.  What caused all these low scores?

One reason is getting out of your comfort zone.  We discussed the THS (typical house shot) causing high scores because the oil pattern is designed to steer the ball toward the pocket.  Any THS will do this, but all THS’s are not the same.  When you bowl on the same shot all the time, you develop a comfort zone for that condition and when that condition changes it can cause you problems.  This can happen as the condition changes as you bowl, or it can happen if the condition is slightly different than normal.  Being able to adjust to changing lane conditions is something you need to be able to do in order to bowl high scores.  It would be easy if we could stand in the same place for every shot and aim at the same target every time, and have the same ball reaction on every shot, but that doesn’t happen very often.  The condition is constantly changing and you must change with it.

Recently we made a change and now bowl all our games on the west side of Western Bowl.  We made that change because of the Regional Tournament.  The tournament will be on that side of the bowling center and we wanted the teams that get to bowl in the tournament to have a house advantage.  If we switched for the tournament it would cancel the home advantage our teams would have.  Western Bowl uses a different lane oiling machine for that side of the center, and the condition is a little different than the other lanes so you must make the adjustment to score high.  Another factor was the match at Eastridge this week.  Something was different and the lanes hooked more than usual causing scoring problems for both teams.  When this happens, you must use all your skill to adjust to the condition.  There were some frustrated and angry bowlers which made the problem worse.  You need to be able to adjust and stay in control of your emotions when you bowl.  Bad conditions are going to happen and you need to know how to handle the situation and adjust.

It’s likely that we will have multiple teams make it to the State Tournament.  There will be a lot of teams bowling a lot of games and the condition will change drastically.  If you want to do well, you have to adjust to these changing conditions.  One way to make this adjustment is to go to the bowling center after a five member league has bowled and practice on those lanes.  You will have to get away from your comfort zone in order to bowl well.  After some practice, maybe you will develop skills that the best bowlers have and you won’t need a comfort zone in order to bowl well.

Week Seven Results

Borger and West Texas bowled at Wildcatters this week.  West Texas won three of the individual matches to take the early lead, but Borger swept the Baker games and won the match 10-5

Tascosa and Bushland started the second half of the season on Monday.  Tascosa boys took a 4-3 lead after the individual matches and won two of the Baker games to win the match 10-5.  The Tascosa girls won four of the individual matches and two of the Baker games to win the match 12-3.

Randall and Canyon bowled at Western Bowl on Wednesday.  In the boy’s match, Canyon won four of the individual matches and swept the Baker games to win the match 14-1.  The Canyon girls took a 4-3 lead after the individual matches and won two of the Baker games to win the match 10-5.

Amarillo High went to Eastridge to take on Caprock on Wednesday.  The Amarillo boyswon four of the individual matches and two of the Baker games and won the match 12-3.  The Caprock girls won three of the individual matches and swept the Baker games and won the match 13-2.

Another High Score

Another high school bowler had a high score.  Congratulations to Wes Baker from Amarillo High for a 300 game in the Saturday morning junior league at Western Bowl.

To Push or To Hinge

At one time most coaches taught bowlers to push the ball forward until our arm was fully extended, and then let the ball fall into the swing.  Today if you watch elite bowlers you will see some who still use this technique.  However, most of the top coaches teach the hinge technique where the push is much shorter and rounder.  Try this and see if it works for you.  From your starting position, push the ball forward a few inches and let it fall into the swing while your elbow is still bent.  As your elbow hinges, your arm will reach full extension as the ball passes by your leg.  This technique will help keep your hand under the ball throughout the swing and allow you to release the ball with more revolutions and with a higher rotation, creating more power at the pins.

Week Six Results

The Canyon and Bushland boy’s teams started the week tie for second place with one week to go in the first half of the season.  Canyon won three of the individual matches and three of the Baker games to win the match 11-4 and take sole possession of second place.  The Canyon girls won four of the individual matches and split the Baker points to beat Bushland 10-5.

The Amarillo High boys won three of the individual matches and two of the Baker games to beat Tascosa 11-4 and stay undefeated.  The Tascosa girls won three of the individual matches and swept the Baker games to beat Amarillo High 13-2.

At Eastridge Lanes, the Caprock boys won four of the individual matches and swept the Baker games to beat Randall 14-1.  The Caprock girls won three of the individual matches all swept the Baker games to beat Randall 13-2.

As the first half ends, Amarillo leads the boys at 7-0, Canyon is second at 6-1, Bushland is third at 5-2 and Tascosa is fourth at 3-4.  If the season ended here those teams would represent the district at the regional tournament.  However we will bowl around again and any team still could get one of the playoff spots.

In the girls division, Caprock and Tascosa are tied at 4-1 for first and Amarillo and Canyon are tied at 3-2 for third.  Caprock can win the district but can’t represent the district at regionals because they have a bowler that does not attend Caprock, so right now Tascosa, Amarillo, and Canyon are leading for the playoff spots.

Respect

For those of us who have been involved in high school bowling since we started in 2003, one of the things that makes it worth it to us is the respect the students have for the sport, for their opponents, and for their coaches.  We have had a few instances of disrespect in the last 6 years, but most of those have been settled easily.  We don’t have a lot of rules because we haven’t needed them.  We do get rules from the state office but we have not had to supplement those with local rules.  We have let the coaches set the policies for their teams.

This week we had an incident where someone (not one of our bowlers) who was watching a match took a cell phone video of one of the bowlers and was going to post in on You Tube.  There is a big difference between the recreational bowler and the sport bowler and sometimes the parents and the spectators don’t seem to know the difference.  Sometimes even the bowlers don’t always know the difference.  However one thing we would like to instill in everyone is the competition between schools might get heated, but that should never carry over to the individual team members.  Every one should have respect for the effort the bowlers put forth in search of victory.  No one should be held up to ridicule by other bowlers or by spectators.  The coaches  and the bowlers should try to inform the people who come to watch that we are in competition and they should respect our efforts.

Release

If you want high scores you must have a release that creates a ball motion that gives the ball a high percentage chance to knock all the pins down.  The position of your hand at the bottom of the swing will determine the direction of the rotation.  If the rotation is more forward, the ball will go straighter.  If the rotation is more to the side, the ball will curve more.

Experiment with these different hand positions and they can help you deliver the ball with a stronger roll.  A word of caution, overturning the ball can cause the ball to miss the target to the left and can reduce the speed of the rotation and cause a weak hit.

Week Five Results

The week started with a matchup of unbeaten teams.  The Bushland and Amarillo boys had won all their matches.  Amarillo High swept all the points and won the match 15-0.  The Amarillo High girls won four of the individual matches and swept the Baker to beat the Bushland girls 14-1.

Borger and West Texas had a dual match at Western Bowl against Canyon and Randall.  Canyon won both their matches, beating Borger 13-2 and West Texas 14-1.  West Texas beat Randall 9-6 and Randall beat Borger 11-4.

Tascosa went to Eastridge where the boys beat Caprock 11-4.  In the girl’s match Caprock handed Tascosa their first loss 11-4.

Arm Swing and Release

We have discussed lane conditions, but lane conditions don’t matter if you can’t release the ball in a manner that takes advantage of the lane condition.  Every high average bowler has a release that projects the ball onto the lane in a manner that gets the ball to the pocket with enough power to create a high strike percentage.  The best bowlers can change the release to create the proper ball path that creates the high strike percentage.  The question is,  why can some bowlers have consistently high scores while some have high a high score one game and then seem to fall apart the next game?  What causes a bowler to shoot 200 the first game and 150 the second game?  How do you achieve the kind of consistency that allows you to maintain high scores?

We bowl all our games on a house shot that will allow you to shoot high scores without being very accurate.  The oil in the middle and the friction by the gutter will tend to steer errant shots back to the pocket.  If you pull one shot left, hit your target with the second shot and swing the ball to the right on your third shot and get three strikes, you didn’t get those strikes with skill, the lane condition got them.  On the other hand, that inconsistency can also cause you to have a bad score after a good score.

These are areas you must improve to gain the kind of consistency that leads to higher scores.

  1. Starting Position (Stance)

  2. Footwork (Approach)

  3. Armswing

  4. Timing

  5. Finish Position

  6. Release

  7. Targeting

We will try to cover the fundamentals involved in all these skills.  If you watch good bowlers, you will notice that they all have individual styles, but there are some basic fundamentals common to all of them.

Week Four Results

The week started with Caprock coming to Western Bowl to take on Bushland.  In the girl’s match Caprock won four of the individual matches and seven of the Baker points and won the match 13-2.  In the boy’s match Caprock took the early lead after the individual matches 5-2.  Bushland won the first Baker game and Caprock won the second meaning the winner of the last Baker game would win the match.  Bushland won a close game by 2 pins and won the match 8-7.

The Tascosa girls took a slight 4-3 lead over Canyon after the individual matches, but Tascosa won 6 of the 8 Baker points and won the match 10-5.  In the boy’s match, Canyon took a 5-2 lead after the individual matches and the won 4 Baker points to beat Tascosa 9-6.

Amarillo High and Randall had the last match before the holiday break.  The Amarillo girls won 6 ½ points in the individual matches and swept the Baker games to win the match 14 ½  to ½ .  TheAmarillo High Boys swept all the individual and Baker points and won the match 15-0.

Week Two Results

We started the week with Randall against Tascosa.  The Tascosa boys and girls won four of the five individual matches and swept the Baker games to beat the Randall teams with identical 14-1 scores.

Canyon went to Eastridge Lanes to take on Caprock.  In the boy’s match, Canyon won three of the individual matches and two of the Baker games to beat Caprock 11-4.  The Caprock girls won four of the individual games to take a 6-1 lead after the individual matches.  The two teams each won a Baker game and tied one game and Caprock won the match 11-4.

The Borger and West Texas boys came to Western Bowl to meet Amarillo High and Bushland.  The Amarillo High and Bushland girls got the week off because Borger and West Texas don’t have girl’s teams.  Amarillo High won four of the individual matches and swept the Baker games to beat borger 14-1.  Amarillo then swept the individual matches and Baker games to beat West Texas 15-0

Bushland won four of the individual matches and one of the Baker games and beat West Texas 8-7.  Then Bushland won three individual matches and two of the Baker games to beat Borger 11-4.

There were more high scores this week.  Travis Turner had games of  213 and 254 for a 467 series against West Texas and the had 266 and 279 for a 545 series against Borger.  This is his second 500 series this year.  Tanner Palmer also had a 500 series against Randall.  He had 269 and 246 for a 515 series.  Amarillo High had a team game of 1154 and a team series of 2242.  They also had Baker games of 221, 232 and 236 for a Baker series of 689.  There were other high scores this week.  Look at the next section to see who bowled well this week.

November 21 2009  Newsletter #1

Changes

There are some changes in high school bowling this year.  First, the Regional Tournament will be held in Amarillo at Western Bowl.  The teams from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area will come here for Regional.  Second, for the first time, the State Tournament will be somewhere other than Dallas or Houston.  This year, the State Tournament will be held at Bandera Bowl in San Antonio.  The third change will affect our high average bowlers.  The state singles tournament has grown to the point that it is becoming more difficult to find a bowling center with enough lanes to hold the singles tournament and the team tournament at the same time.  This year we will hold a singles tournament after the team tournament at regional.  As the tournament rules for the singles are developed, we will let the bowlers know.

Week One Results

The first week, all matches were held at Western Bowl.  On Monday, Caprock came to Western Bowl to bowl Amarillo High.  In the boy’s match, Amarillo High won four of the individual matches and two of the Baker games and won the match 12-3.  In the girl’s match, Amarillo High won three of the individual matches, but Caprock won two individual matches and team totals to take a 4-3 lead.  AHS won the first Baker game to go ahead 5-4 and Caprock won the second Baker game to go back into the lead 6-5.  That made the third game a sudden death game for both teams.  The winner would win the match.  Amarillo High took the last game and won the match 9-6.

Tascosa and Bushland bowled on Tuesday.  In the boy’s match, Tascosa took a 5-2 lead after the individual matches.  Bushland won the first two Baker games to take a 6-5 lead going into the last Baker game.  Tascosa won the last Baker game but could not overcome the series lead and Bushland won the match 8-7.  In the girls match, Tascosa won four of the individual matches and two of the Baker games to win the match 12-3.

On Wednesday it was Canyon against Randall.  The Randall boys won three of the individual matches, but Canyon won two individual matches and team totals to take a 4-3 lead.  Canyon won two of the Baker games and won the match 10-5.  The Randall girls also won three of the individual matches, but Canyon won two matches and team totals to take a 4-3 lead.  Randall won the first Baker game and the teams tied the second game to create a 6-6 tie and the second sudden death game of the week going into the last game.  Canyon won the last Baker game to win the match 9-6.
